Abstract This paper pertains to an experimental investigation on nucleate pool boiling of saturated water from uncoated as well as copper coated mild steel heating tubes of thicknesses 19, 26, 33, 41 and 60 m at atmospheric and subatmospheric pressures. It also includes the effect of heat flux, pressure and coating thickness on boiling heat transfer coefficient on coated tube surfaces

Numerical simulation and optimization of fluid flow in cyclone vortex finder  
Abstract In this study, a computational fluid dynamics is used to predict and evaluate the effects of vortex finder shape and diameter on cyclones performance and flow field. The Eulerian–Lagrangian computational procedure is used to predict particles tracking in the cyclone. The flow field is calculated using 3D Reynolds-averaged Naveir–Stokes equations    
Polygala cyparissias oleoresin: Comparing CO2 and classical organic solvent extractions  
Abstract Composition of plant extracts and process efficiency are mainly defined by the extraction method used. Plant materials are rich source of valuable substances and the Polygala cyparissias, a bush that grows at dune regions in South America, presents important active compounds. Therefore, the present study deals with the assessment of the composition profile of P. cyparissias extracts, from root and from stems and leaves, obtained by CO2 at various conditions of temperature and pressure and by classical organic solvent extractions    
Behavior of mixtures of nano-particles in magnetically assisted fluidized bed  
Abstract Gas-fluidization of nano-particle mixtures in magnetically assisted fluidized bed (MAFB) has been investigated. Nano-particles undergoing fluidization exhibit two types of behavior: agglomerate particulate fluidization (APF) and agglomerate bubbling fluidization (ABF). Fluidization of sole SiO2 or ZnO nano-particles exhibits APF and ABF, respectively, but mixtures of them can be fluidized stably and almost homogenously. Stable fluidization of nano-particle mixtures can be achieved by variations in both the field intensity and the initial mixture content    
On hydrodynamic optimisation of multi-channel counter-flow lamella settlers and separation efficiency of cohesive particles  
Abstract In process and wastewater treatment applications, lamella settlers (LS) are well-known for their relatively high space-time-yield compared to ordinary settling basins. However, they are still characterised by relatively poor performance mainly due to poor hydrodynamic design and the application of incomprehensive models for the overall separation efficiency. These have both led to non-uniform feed distribution in multi-channel separators and poor capacity sizing causing some discontent in practical applications    
Liquid–liquid extraction of bromelain and polyphenol oxidase using aqueous two-phase system  
Abstract Aqueous two-phase extraction is employed for the first time for separation and purification of mixture of enzymes (bromelain and polyphenol oxidase) from the pineapple (Ananas comosus L. Merr.). Influence of several parameters such as phase forming polymer molecular weight (polyethylene glycol 1500–20,000), concentration of phase forming components (polyethylene glycol, 12–18%, w/w, and potassium phosphate, 14–20%, w/w) and system pH (6.0–9.0) on differential partitioning of bromelain and polyphenol oxidase required for the purification is studied

Abstract Response surface methodology was applied to optimize the fermentative phase for the mezcal production from Agave salmiana. A 3k factorial design was used to obtain models describing the relationship between the ethanol production, process productivity, and product yield with respect to the fermentation temperature and the initial sugar concentration    
Effect of pressure-drop rate on the isolation of cananga oil using instantaneous controlled pressure-drop process  
Abstract The isolation of Indonesian cananga oil was carried out by a new process, instantaneous controlled pressure drop (DIC). Dry cananga flowers (Cananga odorata Hook. fil. et Thomson, forma macrophylla) were exposed for a short time to saturated steam and then the pressure was abruptly decreased to a vacuum level (about 5 kPa). This abrupt pressure drop provokes auto-vaporization of the superheated volatile compounds
